Will you pay for a JVM on Mac OS X
This has been a sad week for java. One of the string of bad things happening to it, is the abandonement by Mac OS X. Among the interesting thoughts that have been thrown out there for a possible rescue plan, this one seemed to stand out.
In a nutshell, the link points to a post by Adam-Bien suggesting that users might pay for a JVM on the Mac, thereby opening up a business opportunity. That might be far fetched considering
- Apple wants to be a control freak of sorts. Anything that is not objective-C is a target
- Folks usually have a very hard time convincing themselves to pay for something that they used to get for free.
- It would be pretty difficult to write a JVM targeted for the Mac from scratch, given that many native API calls are secrets.
But who knows. Why dont you be the judge and tell us what you think. Would you shell out some dough for a JVM on the Mac ? Take a small poll. The comments on Adam’s post seemed to swing both ways, so perhaps a poll will enumerate what people feel.
Will you pay for a JVM on Mac OS X
- No. Not paying for something that should be free (74%, 121 Votes)
- Yes I will pay for a JVM on the MAC (26%, 42 Votes)

So on top of the Apple tax involved in getting a Mac, people are prepared to pay for a JVM when it’s free on Linux & Windows? If there’s no supported free VM on the Mac I’ll move to a platform where there is, thanks.
Apple sucks. I believe that Mac OS should be FORBIDDEN and because of that stupid apple decision everyone should REMOVE mac from there machines because this is an “email and browser OS nothing more”. I believe that google chrome the browser is doing the same job as Mac OS X and even faster.
RIP Mac OS X you ware stupid at the beginning you are stupid now again.
Wow, can I also pay them for a C compiler? How about I give them an extra $50 for the shell, $75 for the bootloader and $100 for X11? No thanks… they’re not interested in Java anymore? Fine, I have moved on too.
@JOKe
Wow, man, are you 10 years old or something? What a load bilge! Perhaps you should be forbidden from posting incoherent drivel like this instead?
I’m skeptical about not being able to create a free JVM for Mac OS X. Whether or not there are private, undocumented api calls that apple’s jvm uses, there are also the regular apis and i believe one could use them to still create a fast, efficient jvm. Plus a server side jvm shouldn’t be a problem because Mac OS X is based on the Mach unix kernel. This isn’t insurmountable. Why don’t we take up the challenge to get OpenJDK working on mac and to hell with apple.
Alternatively we can just send back our macs and buy cheap windows pcs [wince], or a good linux pc/laptop and to hell with apple.
apple might very well suck but well ….
JVM sucks more .. java itself is one of the , if not THE worst language of any other out there for a huge.. variety of reasons.
so even though Jobs is usually just being an a** to anything non-apple i’d rather take his no JVM in the mac as more of a blessing than a CURSE and something to make a fuss about.
on another note obj-c is also s*** but certainly way less than java is, plus as mentioned above there is also the option on moving on a better and maybe more open solution like linux.
no man as i know i will not pay for it
i would use linux or windows, rather than paying for it
I love the Mac so much that I would gladly pay for Java and not use it.
